Revo vs Evolve vs Classic A.R.E. Caps
CX and MX caps come in three generations. The shell is the same shape; the glass and the rear door are what change.

Revo
CX Revo, MX Revo
The cleanest look. Side and front glass is frameless and bonded to the shell with urethane, and the frameless rear door is shaped to the tailgate.
It opens with a OneMotion handle and slam latch on hidden hinges and Hydro-Lift props. The bonded glass has 1 year of coverage against seal leaks.

Evolve
CX Evolve, MX Evolve
Revo's frameless rear door and hardware, paired with aluminum-framed sliding side windows that have screens.
Pick it if you want windows that open for airflow. Framed windows carry a 1-year warranty.

Classic
CX Classic, MX Classic
The traditional build: framed sliding side windows with a screen and an aluminum-framed rear door, which A.R.E. says is 35% thicker than competitors'.
The door opens with a T-handle and a factory-grade lock. Framed windows carry a 1-year warranty.
A.R.E. Cap Heights and Weights
Roof height is measured above the bed rail, and it’s taller on full-size trucks. Weight is the cap itself, which matters for your bed rails and payload.
From A.R.E.’s 2022/23 caps and covers catalog. Weights are approximate, small truck / full-size. Current pages don’t list inches or weights, so ask a dealer to confirm for your truck.
Best A.R.E. Camper Shell for How You Use Your Truck
Start with the job the cap has to do. Each pick below comes from what A.R.E. builds the model for.

Daily driver with a clean look
A.R.E. Z or Z2
Frameless glass and a rear door with no visible hardware. The Z2 also bonds its front and side glass to the shell, so there are no window frames at all.

- Cab-height
- Shell
- Fiberglass, paint matched
- Body warranty

Camping and sleeping in the bed
A.R.E. MX Revo or MX Evolve
The mid-rise roof stands taller than the cab, which A.R.E. says adds headroom and cargo space. That extra height helps over a sleeping platform.

- Shell
- Fiberglass, paint matched
- Body warranty

Rooftop tent or a heavy rack
A.R.E. CX HD or MX HD

- 550 lb, evenly spread
- Toolboxes
- 200 lb each

- Wedge, tallest A.R.E. rear door
- Shell
- Fiberglass, paint matched
- Body warranty

Trades and fleets
A.R.E. DCU, DCU Max or Diamond Edition

- .050 in. TIG-welded aluminum
- Doors
- Full-length side doors
- Warranty

The lowest entry point

- Fiberglass, cab-height
- Classic Aluminum
- Baked enamel
- Classic warranty
- 1 year
A.R.E. Truck Cap Models FAQ
Which A.R.E. caps are cab-height?
Z, Z2, CX Revo, CX Evolve, CX Classic, V, Overland and CX HD. They sit roughly level with the cab roof.
What’s the difference between the Z and Z2?
Both have frameless rear doors with hidden hardware. The Z2 also bonds its front and side glass to the shell with urethane, so there are no window frames or seals.
What does HD mean on an A.R.E. cap?
The CX HD and MX HD add an internal aluminum skeleton. A.R.E. rates their optional roof rack at 550 lb and each optional toolbox at 200 lb, evenly spread.
What is the OTR finish on the Overland?
A textured, UV-stable coating. The Overland wears it in black along the cab line and bed line over a paint-matched body. It’s optional on most other fiberglass models.
