A.R.E. vs Leer

A.R.E. vs Leer used to be a rivalry between two independent cap makers. Since August 2026 RealTruck owns both. They still have separate lineups, warranties and dealers, and owners still argue over which is better built.

Are A.R.E. and Leer the Same Company?

They have the same owner now, but they’re still run as separate brands. RealTruck said in August 2026 that it had no immediate plans to change Leer’s operations or dealers.

Trade press reported that LEER Group was under financial strain before the sale, and some Leer owners posted about slower warranty support around that time. RealTruck itself restructured its debt out of court in April 2026.

A.R.E. vs Leer: What Owners Say

Owners who have run both rarely agree on a winner. The pattern: A.R.E. gets credit for hardware and paint, Leer for looking factory-installed.

Where owners favor A.R.E.

Better latches and hinges, and a narrower base so the cap comes off without removing a bed rack.

How to Choose Between A.R.E. and Leer

  1. Start with the dealer

Owners name the installer as the biggest factor in leaks and fit. A well-reviewed local dealer beats a brand preference.

  2. Compare the exact models

Match roof height, windows and rear door, for example an A.R.E. CX against a Leer 100XQ, not brand against brand.

  3. Check the wait

Both are built to order. Owners have seen one brand quote weeks sooner than the other in the same town.

  4. Weigh work-truck terms

Leer’s commercial warranty runs 5 years, against 3 years on A.R.E.’s DCU caps. See A.R.E. commercial caps.
